Nearly half of the 101,256 books collected during the United Way of Tampa Bay Second Annual Children’s Book Drive were donated by Publix employees. Recently, about 200 Publix employees, as part of the September 11 National Day of Service participated in a special “Sortopalooza.”
Volunteers sorted, cleaned, boxed and prepared for delivery to area schools the more than 50,000 books Publix employees collected.
As a result of the Book Drive, more than 27,000 elementary school children in low- income Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties schools will receive books of their own to take home.
“Publix employees continue to demonstrate their passion for helping others in our community,” said Betty Tribble, Vice President of Volunteer Services with United Way of Tampa Bay.
“Their contribution to literacy in our schools is significant. They are making a huge impact as we put books in the hands of children.” |
