Financial Assistance Programs

Emergency Food and Shelter Program
Since 1983, United Way has administered the Federal Government’s Emergency Shelter Program, partnering with two local organizations, one in Pinellas County, one in Hillsborough. Through this program, United Way helps to ensure that $1,000,000 is allocated to help low-income residents get emergency help with rent, mortgage, food, and utilities. Take a look some of last year’s results:

  • 850 Tampa Bay households were assisted with emergency one time only rent or mortgage monies to avoid the onset of homelessness for such reasons as temporary loss of job/reduction of hours or sudden unknown/unplanned health demands.

  • Over 115,000 nights of shelter were provided to keep individuals (with and without children) off the street.

  • Almost a quarter of a million meals (both prepared and items with which to make a nutritious meal) were provided to assist individuals and families to manage in times of hunger and economic stress.

Partnership with Progress Energy
Thanks to contributions from Progress Energy customers and corporate gifts, Progress Energy is able to offer the Energy Neighborhood Fund. Residents in Pinellas County who experience an emergency because of job loss or an unexpected expense (e.g. a large medical bill) can get one-time help with paying their utility bill. United Way is responsible for transmitting and monitoring the funds from Progress Energy to the designated human service providers who screen and assist those in need of such help. Last year, more than 1,000 benefited from this United Way-Progress Energy partnership.

Partnership with Publix Supermarkets
As a result of a special corporate gift, United Way is responsible for administering and monitoring the local Last Resort Fund awarded to two agencies in the Tampa Bay area. This fund responds to one-time limited emergency needs of area residents to alleviate economic hardships and help ensure people can retain their housing.
