Books find their way into children’s
hands and hearts

During the organized chaos of "Sortopalooza," 1800 books were boxed for delivery to Campbell Park Elementary in St. Petersburg. Around the corner from Tropicana Field, students with their parents' help, selected their own books to take home. Wide-eyed children, still in their
first week of the new school year, chose age-appropriate books that interested them. To many, these books might be the first additions to their own library.

Eager readers receive books of their own

With book titles spread out before them, children in kindergarten through 5th grade, slowly scanned their chooses of books. For many, it was not a quick decision. Some students looked for topics of interest like animals or science. Some girls squealed over finding just the right Disney Princess title. Bonnie Kelley, Supervisor of Library Media/Technology for Pinellas County Schools, commented that one parent remarked that they had never seen so many parents come to the school for an event. It seems the parents were as excited as their children to receive the books.

In the coming weeks, more than 25,000 children from 42 schools in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties will receive books of their own as a result of the United Way of Tampa Bay Children's Book Drive. More than 135 workplaces contributed the new and gently-used books for the children.
